It is rather unfortunate that the arguments presented by Senator Femai are not party policy and do not reflect the true position of the party. The MDC has a sound Health and HIV/AIDS policy which we can share with you.

We have been found wanting in the fight against HIV and AIDS because many pastors do not learn anything that has to do with the epidemic; and discussing HIV with church members has been a taboo, yet we have been losing members more often than not. The church is spending more time burying members rather than saving their souls.

The National Executive Committee Chairperson of the Zimbabwe National Network of People Living with HIV (ZNNP+), Mr. Sebastian Chinhaire has called on the government to make sure that the nation’s own support for its HIV/AIDS programmes does not play a complementary role to support the programmes receive from external donors. Mr. Chinhaire was addressing journalists in Harare on Monday, at the launch of the “Fund Health Now” initiative.

As Zimbabwe prepares to commemorate World AIDS Day, the National Aids Council (NAC) says 2011 has been a better year compared to the previous three years, when most of the country’s programmes were affected by the then prevailing hyper-inflationary environment. However, a major challenge looms ahead for Zimbabwe, which is faced with an ever diminishing donor support base, for the it’s HIV/AIDS programmes.

Speaking at the launch of the “Health Transition Fund” at Marondera Hospital on Monday this week, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangira said “There is need for a unified, national effort towards improving access to quality health care, especially for women and children, and the government remains committed to achieving its health related Millennium Development Goals”.

With this in mind, Zimbabwe launched a National Circumcision Policy two years ago and now it has set a goal of circumcising 1.2 million men by 2015.

The Minister of Women’s Affairs, Gender and Community Development, Dr. Olivia Muchena has blamed cultural and religious practices for limiting the access of women and girls in Zimbabwe to HIV counseling and testing, as well as Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) services, stating that these practices place the women and girls at a disproportionate risk of contracting HIV.
