As Zimbabwe prepares to commemorate World AIDS Day, the National Aids Council (NAC) says 2011 has been a better year compared to the previous three years, when most of the country’s programmes were affected by the then prevailing hyper-inflationary environment. However, a major challenge looms ahead for Zimbabwe, which is faced with an ever diminishing donor support base, for the it’s HIV/AIDS programmes.

The 2009 Global Tuberculosis Control Report from the World Health Organization (WHO) ranks Zimbabwe 17th among 22 countries worldwide with the highest TB burden. Zimbabwe had an estimated 71,961 new TB cases in 2007, with an estimated incidence rate of 539 cases per 100,000 population.

Zimbabwe Parliamentarians Against HIV and AIDS (ZIPAH) said they are concerned that Zimbabwe remains one of the countries experiencing huge challenges in the treatment, care and support of its people and is among the worst hit by HIV and AIDS in the world. This came out of the workshop on HIV and Human Rights Law which was held in Victoria Falls over the past weekend.

Early Start of ART Reduces Risk of HIV Transmission To Partner

The HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) in Washington, DC has just announced groundbreaking results from an HIV/AIDS Phase-III multi-site randomized clinical study conducted since April 2005. Results from HPTN Study 052 show that when HIV-infected individuals start taking oral antiretroviral therapy (ART) early, the chances of their uninfected sexual partners getting infected with the HIV virus are reduced by 96%! This is reportedly the first study to show that early treatment for infected individuals can help protect HIV-negative sexual partners from contracting the virus.
